What is a Job application letter?

A job application letter which sometimes called a Cover letter. It is a document sent or uploaded together with a curriculum vitae CV to apply for job vacancies. While your CV will provide your academic history, your job application letter explains how you qualified for the work. However, some institutes just want to see only your CV before hiring. It definitely won’t hurt to include an application letter with your CV.

Tips for Writing a Good Job Application Letter

Writing a cover letter can be a very challenging task. But if you take one step at a time, you can be an expert at writing a good job application letter.

How to Get Started

Before writing your application letter, do some research. This will help you to know what details you will need to include in your letter. Your letter shall be your first introduction, it must contain the most crucial details about you.

Note that, the letter explains how you fit the position provided. Since you have limited space, highlight the most relevant skills, experiences, and abilities.

5 Things to consider in writing an application letter.

1. Emphasize and Express your abilities and skills.

As we noted before, an application letter is your first introduction. And it provides an opportunity to sell yourself as the best and most suitable candidate for the open position. You should provide specific needed details for the position for which you are applying. Explain shortly your skills, abilities, and experience that will benefit the organization.

2. Stay concise

We noted that the space is limited. Just write a letter that is more manageable and so appealing. Don’t get tempted to include a lot of details and information about yourself, it is more important to be concise. Try to keep your job application letter to one page.

3. Proof-read the letter

Make sure your letter is simple and as positive as possible, this is because this letter is your first impression. You want to avoid small mistakes in writing like any grammatical or spelling errors. Be careful and avoid a potentially negative first impression.

4. Review the job listed keywords

Most job postings will show certain skills and abilities that the hiring manager and supervisor need from applicants. The candidate must include these keywords in the application letter, this will helps to show to the person who reviewed it that you would fit in that specific position.

5. Send a letter for every position in which you are applying

Unless a job posting specifically states not to send an application letter, it is smart to send one for each job to which you apply. This is because the letter offers the opportunity for a potential employer to learn more about you, as a result, it gives you the chance to set yourself apart from other applicants.

Format for the best job application letter.

A job application letter is categorized into sections. Each section provides specific information in the letter. In addition, an application letter format should follow a business letter format.

Sender / Applicant’s Address with a date.

The first section of the format of the application letter is the address of the candidate. Normally positioned on the topside left of the letter, however, you can write it even on the right top side of the letter. The sender’s address must show the name of the applicant, the location of which the applicant is from, and a piece of contact information. After that, you can write a date on which you are writing and send the letter.

Sample of Sender’s address.

[Sendr’s name]
[Postal code and Your city and/or ZIP code]
[Your phone number]
[Your email address]

[The Date]

Hiring manager’s Address with salutation.

The second address after the date is the address of the company/hiring manager. This address shows where the letter is sent. Therefore it should contain the title of the hiring manager and the full company address. After that, there should be a salutation to the hiring manager.

Sample of Hiring manager’s address.

[Name of the hiring manager or supervisor]
[Title of the hiring manager or supervisor]
[Company name]
[Company physical address]

Salutation [Dear Mr./Ms.],

Main body with Heading

This is the most important part of the letter. Starting with the Heading which explains the purpose of the letter. The main body is written in different paragraphs. The paragraphs show your interest in the job opening.

In the first paragraph of your letter, outline the job title which you are applying for, and state where you saw the opening posting. Also, include your specific interest in the role and company.

In the next few paragraphs outline your experience related to the position you are applying for and your qualification for that position.

As you’re writing your job application letter, try to consider how you can incorporate aspects of your personality while remaining very professional

Before closing your letter, express your appreciation to the hiring manager for using his/her time to review your letter and considering you for the position opening.

Closing the letter.

Many people use “Sincerely” to close the letter, although any professional sign-off is ok to include. The final line of the letter should be your full name. If you submit a hard copy of the letter, include your signature above your typed name.
